What is Micro-Perception In Depth (MPID)?

In Dr. Tham Hui Saan’s years of practice, she realized that the therapeutic effect of conventional acupuncture is not significant and unstable. Thus, she spent 10 years researching the shortcomings of conventional acupuncture and made improvements. During the process, she developed a unique method of palpation (using hand for) and inspection (observation examination) to detect subtle changes in human tissues. By analysing the biological information released from tissues’ changes, she was able to understand the patient’s condition.
Dr. Tham believed that this method of examination and analysis is a long-lost component of ancient medicine. In modern biomedical terms interpretation, it refers to the morphological examination of human tissues. Traditional Chinese medicine is renowned for its macroscopic perspective, while morphology belongs to a more detailed and subtle microscopic perspective, hence it is called Micro-Perception In Depth. The acupuncture method based on a microscopic perspective for treatment is named Palpation Guided Acupuncture (PGA).

Han Research Academy

Bridging Clinical Excellence and Scholarly Advancement

The Han Research Academy serves as the dedicated educational and research arm of Han Neuro Acupuncture & Herbal Specialist. Established to extend the centre’s legacy of healing – Micro Perception In-Depth(MPID) beyond the treatment room, the Academy represents a convergence of rigorous scientific inquiry and hands-on practical mastery.

At the Han Research Academy, we operate under a core philosophy: that true expertise is born from the synthesis of theory and practice. Our department is structured around three interdependent pillars designed to cultivate the next generation of practitioners and advance the field of Chinese Medicine (CM):

Advanced Skill Training

We provide specialized, high-intensity training programs that translate the centre’s proprietary clinical protocols into actionable skills. Under the direct guidance of senior practitioners, participants master advanced techniques in palpation-guided acupuncture (PGA), precision herbalism, and MPID palpation and observation  (integrative diagnostic methods). Our curriculum bridges the gap between textbook knowledge and real-world clinical application.

Innovative Research

Committed to evidence-based practice, the Academy serves as a department for clinical research and documentation. We systematically study patient outcomes, explore the biological physics mechanisms behind acupuncture, and document the efficacy of  herbal formulas in a modern context. Our research initiatives aim to contribute meaningful data to the global Chinese Medicine and Medicine community while continually refining the clinical acupuncture protocols used within the Han Neuro Acupuncture practice.

Immersive Workshops

Recognizing that learning is an ongoing journey, we host a series of immersive workshops for both professionals and enthusiasts. These sessions range from intimate clinical observation rounds to intensive hands-on seminars in acupuncture techniques and herbal formulation. These workshops provide a collaborative environment where knowledge is shared and skills are sharpened. Through this unique integration of training, research, and workshop facilitation, the Han Research Academy is not merely a school, but a dynamic ecosystem where the future of palpation-guided acupuncture (PGA) and palpation skill is actively studied, taught, and practiced.

“Cultivating Knowledge, Advancing Healing.”

Requirements for practitioner in Palpation Guided Acupuncture (PGA):

Practitioners who practice PGA are required to undergo systematic training to master methods of palpation and inspection accurately. With the combination of disease states analysis, one is able to identify the known and unknown characteristics of disease. Professional competence is enhanced through practising physical examination skills and certification is granted through assessment.

Grading of Micro-Perception in Depth (MPID):

Levels 1 to 4 are elementary level, and Levels 5 to 10 are professional level.

Advantages of Palpation-Guided Acupuncture (PGA):

PGA is an improved version of traditional acupuncture which can effectively identify the hidden root cause of the disease and provide a clearer understanding of the patient’s condition.

Individualized Treatment Plan

Although it is shoulder pain, the location and factors that trigger the pain vary from person to person due to different body constitution. The combination of PGA with individual examination result allows the practitioner to understand the pathological characteristics of different patients and to develop highly precise treatments rather than relying solely on standardized treatments and acupoints.

Emphasize on holistic and comprehensive treatment:

Review the patient’s medical examination results (including blood test reports, X-rays, MRIs, ECHOs, fundus examinations, etc.), medication adherence, dietary and lifestyle habits, work posture and exercise to fully understand the patient’s condition. Elimination of predisposing factors that may worsen the condition and provide more comprehensive treatment and precautions to address complex and severe physical illnesses.

Enhanced the effectiveness of treatment

Emphasizing the core concept of treating the root cause of the disease, accurately treats the root cause of the disease and achieves the goal of curing the patient.

The impact of Palpation-Guided Acupuncture (PGA)

Within just a few years, Palpation-Guided Acupuncture (PGA) has received an overwhelming response from patients and the educational community/sector. To date, it has attracted patients from over 40 countries to travel to Malaysia for treatment. Our centre has expanded from 4 beds to 35 beds since 2012. This technique not only enables those who were incapacitated to work, returning to the workplace but also restoring the lives of people who have lost their ability to take care of themselves. Furthermore, this technique liberates people who had suffered from illness for decades.

The high efficacy of palpation-guided acupuncture (PGA) has led to research collaboration with University Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and teaching activities at the International Medical University (IMU) in Malaysia. This technique has also attracted traditional Chinese medicine practitioners from countries around the world, including Japan, the United States, Switzerland, China, and Singapore, to come and learn.

As Dr. Tham said, “The pursuit of medical skills is endless. It is a priceless reward when seeing families who face difficulty smiling happily after they regain their health!”
